Cycle of Abuse Awareness by Dallas Police Department
Staff Report / dallaslocal.org
**Dallas Police Department Highlights the Cycle of Abuse During Domestic Violence Awareness Month**
The Dallas Police Department is raising awareness about the cycle of abuse, a pattern commonly seen in abusive relationships. This cycle consists of four distinct phases:
1. **Tension Builds**: Stress and conflict in daily life can increase pressure within a relationship. Victims may try to ease the tension by complying with their abusers.
2. **Abusive Incident**: During this phase, different forms of abuse can occur, including verbal, emotional, physical, or sexual abuse. Common behaviors include anger, intimidation, and threats.
3. **Honeymoon Phase**: Following an abusive incident, the abuser often expresses remorse. They may apologize, seek forgiveness, and show affection to the victim, promising that the abuse will not happen again.
4. **Calm**: The relationship may enter a calmer period where the abuse decreases or stops. During this time, the abuser may continue to ask for forgiveness and make gestures intended to demonstrate change, although the sincerity of these actions may diminish over time.
The Dallas Police Department emphasizes the importance of recognizing the cycle of abuse as a critical step toward ending it. This information is particularly relevant during Domestic Violence Awareness Month.
