**50th Annual Harambee Festival Set for October 26 in Dallas**
The 50th Annual Harambee Festival will take place on Saturday, October 26, 2024, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Martin Luther King Jr. Community Center, located at 2922 MLK Jr. Blvd, Dallas, TX 75215. This year’s festival, themed "Harambee... A Global Celebration," is hosted by Liz Mikel, known as the Madame of the Mic.
Harambee, an East African Swahili word meaning "Togetherness and Unity," originated in the early 1970s as an alternative community event to Halloween. The festival aims to provide a positive cultural experience for children, youth, and adults. Over the past 50 years, it has grown to attract hundreds of attendees each year.
Visitors will enjoy continuous family-friendly activities, including performances from national and emerging artists, spoken word artistry, dancing, storytelling, and African drumming, supported by local sponsors such as 97.9 The Beat, Majic 94.5, KNON, KKDA, and KRNB.
Additionally, this year’s festival will include early voting, health screenings, community workshops, and an African mask display designed by local students. Guests can shop at the Harambee African Marketplace, featuring vendors offering ethnic paintings, jewelry, holistic products, African clothing, books, and more.
Children can engage with fun educational games, face painting, bounce houses, a petting zoo, and tech activities at the Arthello Beck, Jr. Watoto Village. Non-profit organizations will provide resources on health care, social services, financial literacy, home ownership, and college and career preparation.
A variety of food vendors will offer options ranging from desserts to BBQ and seafood.
For those interested in participating as a vendor, volunteer, or sponsor, more information is available at www.harambeedallas.org.
