**Dallas College Alumna Martha Fernandez Inspires Future Generations**

Martha Fernandez, a Dallas College graduate from Mountain View campus, has emerged as a significant leader within her community. Graduating in 2009 with an Associate of Arts in Teaching, Fernandez serves now as the Deputy Chief of Continuous Improvement. Her journey reflects her determination to advocate for underrepresented voices.

As a first-generation college student, Fernandez faced challenges related to finances and immigration status. She applied to public universities but encountered difficulties navigating financial aid. Encouraged by a professor, she was introduced to resources at the University of North Texas and received guidance on pursuing education as a career. By taking advantage of the Rising Star Scholarship and developing a four-year plan, she was able to start her educational journey at Mountain View.

Fernandez emphasizes the importance of representation during Hispanic Heritage Month. As an LGBTQ and undocumented Latina from Oak Cliff, she reflects on the limited education paths in her community. Many peers faced barriers that hindered their pursuit of education, often feeling that work was their only option. Through her story, Fernandez aims to serve as a role model and foster hope for others with similar backgrounds.

Her involvement in on-campus activities was pivotal in enhancing her educational experience. She joined a teacher group led by professor Gloria Garcia, where she became president and organized a coat drive for local children. This early leadership opportunity allowed her to connect with the teaching profession while giving back to younger students. Additionally, her first semester included a cultural studies class that helped her understand the demographic shifts in Texas, further cementing her commitment to education.

Fernandez’s story highlights the potential for Dallas College to support individuals in overcoming barriers to achieve their goals. Her journey serves as an inspiration for students from minority communities and reinforces the value of education in making a positive impact.
