Student Reflects on Heritage and Aspirations at Dallas College
Staff Report / dallaslocal.org
Elisa, a student at Dallas College in Texas, shared her personal journey and the influence of her Mexican heritage on her life. Born in Danville, Illinois, she moved to Mexico at the age of four, where she spent her early years. Currently residing in Dallas, Elisa's parents are still in Mexico, which she describes as a source of strength for her.
Elisa takes pride in her dual nationality and cherishes her Mexican culture, highlighting its vibrancy and happiness. She emphasizes her family's motto to "keep fighting and never give up," and believes that hard work will lead to future success.
She aspires to become a chemist, a shift from her original dream of becoming a doctor due to language barriers. Elisa enjoys working with molecules and conducting laboratory experiments, describing herself as curious and eager to learn. She admires the dedication required in the field of chemistry.
Elisa is motivated by the sacrifices she makes to achieve her goals, particularly the separation from her family. She shares a quote she communicated to her mother, stating, “In this life, sacrifices must be made,” and expresses her desire to provide a better life for her family with the hope they will reunite one day.
In addition to her academic aspirations, Elisa highlighted the emotional significance of a doll named Lele, which symbolizes her transition into womanhood. Reflecting on the Quinceanera tradition, she noted that although she did not have a ceremony, her mother ensured she received her last doll as a reminder of her growth and maturity.
Elisa's story captures her dedication, cultural pride, and commitment to her family's future.
